Documentarian Natalia Almada reveals rich new perspectives on Mexican history, politics, and culture in insightful and poetic films that push the boundaries of how the documentary form addresses social issues. Almada will show excerpts of her films to discuss how her relationship to her subjects informs her storytelling.
From dusk to dawn, El Velador accompanies Martin, a guard who watches over the extravagant mausoleums of Mexico’s most notorious drug lords. Set in the labyrinth of the cemetery, this film about violence without violence reminds us that even in the midst of a drug war, ordinary existence persists in Mexico, quietly defying the dead. Directed by Natalia Almada.(Mexico/USA, 2011, 72 min)
Followed by a Q&A with the Director
