Administered by Temple University’s Department of Theater and the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). Study Away London is a fully accredited semester-long program in the United Kingdom. Program participants live and study in the heart of London close to many of the city’s universities, libraries, museums, theaters and historical sites.

London is a thriving multicultural city boasting cutting-edge theater, art and music. In the Temple Theater London program, students are given the opportunity to experience first-hand this vibrant society while enriching their understanding of theater and the arts in a global context.

The program is open to all Temple University students regardless of major. However, the courses offered are most relevant to students studying theater.

Application Requirements: To be considered student must have a completed at least 40 credits and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applicants must complete the Online Application Form and have two Faculty members complete the online Reference Form. Once accepted students must pay a non-refundable deposit of $450.

Program Fee & Tuition

Program Fee: $8,200*

Tuition (PA Resident): $8,856** 

Tuition (Non-resident): $14,904**

*Estimated 2020 program fee. Fee is in addition to Temple University tuition and university service fees.

**Estimated cost for full-time junior/senior TFMA students (2018-2019 rate). Cost varies based on college enrollment, earn credit-hours and financial aid benefits. 

Deadlines

Due Within Two Week of Acceptance: $450 ($50 non-refundable application fee and $400 program deposit)

$7,750 (Program Fee balance) will be added to your Spring 2019 Tuition Bill.

Inclusions & Benefits

Program includes:

Housing in a supervised AIFS residence within central London. Apartments are fully furnished and equipped with kitchens. Free wireless internet is provided.

Travel pass for use on the buses and underground trains for specific travel zones for the duration of the program.

An orientation program in London with experienced AIFS staff. Includes orientation meeting, student information packet with comprehensive student handbook, a welcome reception, and half-day sightseeing tour of London.

Access to the wireless-enabled AIFS Student Center and the services of an experienced AIFS Program Coordinator and Student Advisors for information, advice and 24-hour emergency contact service.

Access to the student computer lab located in the AIFS Student Center with free email, printing and Internet facilities.

Special membership of the University of London Union giving access to Union clubs and societies and, at additional cost, sports facilities.

 

Additional program benefits:

Tickets to nine theater productions.

A guided day trip to Stratford-upon-Avon including round-trip private coach transfers, visit to selected Shakespearean properties, group dinner and tickets to a performance. Services of a professional guide throughout.

A guided day trip to Bath and Stonehenge including round-trip private coach transfers, entrance to Stonehenge and the Roman Baths. Services of a professional guide throughout.

About AIFS Partnership Programs

AIFS was founded in 1964 and since then, over 1.5 million students have participated in their educational and cultural exchange programs. Over 6,000 American college students study abroad each year with the AIFS College Division— approximately 2,000 of these are on customized, faculty-led programs such as Temple’s Theater in London program.

AIFS Student Center in London – Dilke House

Dilke House becomes a home away from home for students participating in the AIFS London Program. Dilke House is centrally located - accessible from the District, Circle, Northern, Piccadilly and the Hammersmith & City lines. Students can reach key London hotspots, including Oxford Circus, Camden Town, Covent Garden and Shoreditch via a quick tube ride.

Dilke House offers a number of services to AIFS students. There are two computer labs, free wireless internet access and free printing. There are maps, guides and fact sheets available to all students to help them navigate London. The Student Services Center has a number of guidebooks for various popular destinations both in the UK and outside of it. The AIFS Student Advisors are also on hand to answer questions and offer advice from their own travel experiences.

Most importantly there is always someone available to answer any question you might have, from “Where’s the nearest shoe shop?” to “How do I get to Barcelona?” Whether students come in to pick up mail, print out their paper for class or just to chat about their recent weekend trip, someone is there to help.

Directly across from Dilke House is the University of London Union (ULU). All AIFS students have associate status at ULU. This gives them the opportunity to join a wide range of different student societies and sports club, from the Harry Potter club to fencing. Students often take advantage of the many theme nights at the ULU pub, The Duck and Dive. Students’ involvement at ULU gives them the opportunity to meet and socialize with British students, an important aspect of their cultural experience.

Course Options

Theater Courses:

Among the possible course listings, the following may be offered:

THTR 4097 World of the Play

This course provides an overview of the dramaturgical research process. It is the prerequisite for an advanced elective course in Production Dramaturgy. In London you will attend six productions and prepare materials to assist artists and audience in achieving greater insight into the period, locale and intentions of the playwright.  

NOTE: Required for the Theater Major.

THTR 3001History of Theater I 

This course studies the development of theatrical modes of presentation, playwrights, plays, architecture, actors, producing agents, and audiences. Relationships are drawn between the developing theater and the political and social history of the times.

THTR 3279 Acting III

The goal of this course is to assist the actor in negotiating the challenges of heightened language and period style while maintaining commitment to objectives, detailed given circumstances and truthful listening and reacting. The content of this course will focus on poems, monologues and scenes by Shakespeare, but may add in Moliere, the Greeks, and Restoration.  Requires outside preparation of exercises and scenes for presentation in class.  Pre-requisitie:  Acting II, Voice for the Actor, Speech for the Actor, or permission of Study Abroad Supervisor

NOTE: Required for Acting Concentration and Musical Theater Concentration. 

AIFS Courses:

Art History

This course traces the development of modern and contemporary art. It introduces students to a variety of art forms and media since the 19th century as they consider the development of art from the traditional paint on canvas to video art and installations.

British Life and Culture

This multidisciplinary course - required for all attendees - offers students an opportunity to place what they are learning in their other courses into a larger, contemporary context. It also enables students to appreciate more of what they observe during their stay in Britain in regard to the underlying history, themes, and institutions of the UK.

Internship

There are a number of internship possibilities that can be arranged by AIFS. In most cases these are arranged with smaller theaters throughout London and usually require a commitment of 2 days per week. Types of internships can include production assistants, assisting with the building, installing and removing of sets and lights, box office work, and/or clerical work.

Other courses may be offered, depending on student interest. In Spring 2019 we offered History of Fashion Decor. 

In addition, there are classes offered by institutions such as University of Wisconsin/Milwaukee and University of Wyoming, will be posted as they are announced.  In the past, such courses have covered topics such as British Literature Since 1901 and British Women.
