The mission of the Directing Concentration at Temple is to support who you are as a theater artist and to help uncover what it means to be a storyteller in mind, spirit and imagination. Through this work, you will experience what it means to be trained as a well-rounded theater artist under the philosophical foundation of the Collaborative Process, preparing you for the next level of training in theater, television and film. The Directing Concentration provides the highest caliber of instruction and allows students experiencing a liberal arts education to thrive either in a graduate conservatory program or in the real-world of the directing profession. Intensive and varied craft-oriented classes, combined with experiential work in minimalist to full-scale productions, will allow students to develop the skills needed for creative communication and artistic leadership — tools you will find invaluable as you pursue your professional aspirations as productive storytellers.

Students in the Directing Concentration must complete the following curriculum in addition to the department requirements.

Notes on this concentration:

The Directing Concentration curriculum culminates in a senior project. Students must propose a project to the assistant chair for approval. All projects must have a faculty advisor.

Prerequisite course are required for admission into some higher-level courses.

The 9 credit-hour required elective concentration for Directing Concentration students must be in one of the following areas: Music, Dance, Visual Art, or a behavioral science such as Psychology or Anthropology.

Transfers

For students who transfer from other departments, schools and universities, there are several alternative routes to fulfill the Directing Concentration that can be discussed with your theater advisor and/or the head of the Directing Program.

Graduate Success

Graduates of the undergraduate directing program have gone on to direct local amateur productions and assistant-direct professional productions in Philadelphia. Some graduates have also pursued careers as talent agents and casting directors. Alumni have also found success in graduate programs in the US and abroad.
