MA in Musical Theater Studies


This new 30-credit hour, one-year master of arts degree in Musical Theater Studies prepares candidates for commercial, nonprofit or educational positions in the musical theater industry. The program is tailored for graduate students to continue their education and practice in the disciplines of acting, music and dance/movement to prepare them for careers in education, performance, production or direction. The program scope includes an understanding of the aesthetics of the form and graduate level practical experiences in musical theater performance, production and administration. Targeted toward music, theater and education majors wanting more experience in musical theater, the additional courses in teaching and producing musicals could lead to immediate positions in primary/secondary education. The skills and expertise acquired would also apply to educational positions and outreach programs affiliated with professional theaters.

Course of Study

The completion of 30 credits is necessary for the MA in Musical Theater Studies. The degree can be completed over one year.

American Musical Theater

Directing for the Musical Stage

The Business of the Business




Elective options include: Musical Theater Dance Techniques; Introduction to Music Teaching and Learning; Script and Score Analysis; Costume Production; Speech for the Actor; and more. 

Thesis Requirements: A final performance, demonstration project, and/or research paper, is required.
