"Once Again.... Uncanny Returns"

Seventy years after it was initially made, Chris Marker and Alain Resnais’ controversial film, Statues also Die (1953) continues to serve as an important touchstone for contemporary artists and filmmakers. Most recently, Statues also Die is directly referenced in Sir Isaac Julien’s “(Once Again)... Statues Never Die,” a multi-media essay installation produced on the occasion of the 100-year founding of Barnes Foundation. In Julien’s work, Statues also Die unlocks a door onto historical discussions of decolonization and repatriation that extend back to the 1920s. “(Once Again)... Statues Never Die,” engages in a dialogue with both former and present Black artists, cultural workers, and intellectuals to trace the often hidden and suppressed debate regarding the dislocation of African art in museums around the world.
