Temple University Film and Media Arts celebrates Professor Rea Tajiri, who has been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a member of its 2026 class.

Membership in the Academy is one of the highest honors in the film industry, recognizing artists and filmmakers whose exceptional contributions have advanced the art and science of motion pictures. The organization is internationally known for presenting the Academy Awards (Oscars) while supporting excellence in filmmaking through education, preservation, and the celebration of cinematic achievement.

An acclaimed filmmaker, writer, and educator, Tajiri has built a distinguished career in groundbreaking documentary and experimental films that explore memory, history, identity, and social justice. Her work has been exhibited and honored at leading film festivals, museums, and cultural institutions around the world. 

As a faculty member in Temple University's Film and Media Arts program, Tajiri inspires new filmmakers through both her creative practice and her teaching, continuing to mentor emerging storytellers while pushing the boundaries of nonfiction and experimental cinema.
