TFMA Transition FAQ

Effective July 1, 2027, the departments of the School of Theater, Film and Media Arts will fold into the Boyer College of Music and Dance and the Klein College of Media and Communication. This realignment reflects the fast-changing landscape of the media and entertainment industries, to ensure that our graduates are best positioned to thrive.

These FAQs answer common questions about the transition, including timelines, academic advising, registration, tuition and financial aid, and what to expect as you continue your studies.

What is happening, and why?

Answer: Beginning July 1, 2027, the two departments within the School of Theater, Film and Media Arts will be moved – Theater going into the Boyer College of Music and Dance, and Film and Media Arts going into the Klein College of Media and Communication. This realignment, which was approved by the Temple Board of Trustees on October 14, 2026, is the result of many months of consideration by Temple leadership, including Dean Robert Stroker of the Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts and Dean David Boardman of the Klein College, and conversations with faculty. Both deans, along the Provost Libby Wentz and President John Fry, believe this will be beneficial to the students and faculty in these departments and those already in Boyer and Klein.

For FMA students, the move to Klein will open new opportunities and career pathways, and the realignment reflects the dramatic changes taking place in the worlds of cinema, television, video and gaming.

For Theater students, the move to Boyer creates a powerful nexus of the performing arts which will enhance interdisciplinary opportunities for faculty and students and boost connections for greater academic and creative rigor.

When will I be in my new school?

Answer: The School of Theater, Film and Media Arts will be closed effective July 1, 2027. Continuing students, however, will see the name of their new college on their transcript and Banner profile on or around March 1, 2027, so that when it’s time to register for fall 2027 classes, students will be registering under their new home college. As of July 1, 2027, with the move of Theater into the Boyer College of Music, Dance and Theater, and the move of Film and Media Arts into Klein College, the Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts will no longer exist.

Where do I go for academic advising?

Answer: For the remainder of this academic year, advising services will continue to be provided by the Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts (CPCA) Advising Office. Look for information in late spring or early summer about advising in your new home college.

I am graduating this year. What will my diploma or transcript say?

Answer: Students graduating in December 2026, May 2027, and August 2027 will graduate from the School of Theater, Film and Media Arts. At Temple, the undergraduate diploma notes Temple University and the degree earned (e.g. Bachelor of Arts). Your diploma will be signed by the dean of the Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts. The School of Theater, Film and Media Arts will be listed on the transcript.

Will my tuition be different?

Answer: Tuition and fees will not be impacted for this academic year (2026-2027). The university’s tuition schedule for all schools, colleges and programs is announced and published in July each year.

Will my degree requirements or time to degree change?

Answer: If you are a current Theater or Film and Media Arts major, your requirements will not change. Current students are expected to complete the degree requirements published in the undergraduate/graduate bulletins for the year they started in that major.

How will I search for my required courses?

Answer: Students can continue to search by subject name (film and media arts or theater). Subject codes for your required courses will not change. For example, if you are looking for FMA 2241, you can continue to search using the subject “Film and Media Arts” (FMA). Beginning fall 2027, you will see the new college information listed within course information in self-service banner (browse classes).

What will happen to FMA's graduate programs?

Answer: Current students in the MA in MediaXarts, MFA in Film and Media Arts and the Ph.D. in Documentary Arts and Visual Research can expect their programs and requirements to remain the same. After July 1, 2027, these programs will be moved to Klein College.

Will there be any changes to the faculty or teachers in my program?

Answer: Faculty in the respective departments will be moving with students to their new home colleges.

Will the location of my department change?

Answer:  Not for the time being, but both departments (Theater and Film and Media Arts) were already scheduled to move to the new Caroline Kimmel Pavilion for Arts and Communication in fall 2027.

Will there be any impact on my financial aid, scholarships or grants?

Answer: Any scholarships, grants or aid you are currently receiving this academic year will not be impacted by this change. You will continue to receive any scholarships you were awarded as long as you remain financially and academically eligible. Remember to complete your FAFSA every year.

I’m considering a major in TFMA. Can I declare a TFMA major in spring 2027?

Answer: Yes. Students planning to declare a Theater major effective fall 2027 will be in the Boyer College of Music, Dance and Theater. Students planning to declare a Film and Media Arts major effective fall 2027 will be in the Klein College of Media and Communication. If you are considering a change in major now for the spring of 2027, you will be in the School of Theater, Film and Media Arts and move to the respective new college with the rest of continuing students in fall of 2027.

Where can I go if I have additional questions?

Answer: Theater and FMA students will continue to be advised by the CPCA Advising Office through June 30, 2027. If Theater and FMA students have questions about their academic program or degree requirements, please continue to use the resources and services of the CPCA Advising Office. For FMA students with advising questions, please continue to work with CPCA advising during the 26-27 academic year. For questions about student and career services in Klein College, FMA students are welcome to visit the Klein EDGE office in the basement of Annenberg, where they will find Klein’s Career Services and Global Opportunities office along with other student services for Klein students.
